Tuning Fork Styles – What’s the difference?

Tuning Fork Styles

In our previous post we looked at the two different finishes of tuning forks that we offer here at Sacred Notes, aluminium and gold tone. (read all about that here)

In this post we delve into another aspect of our tuning forks, the different styles available.

Our tuning forks come as both Un-weighted and Weighted.

The forks’ structures remain the same across both styles it is just the addition of the weights that is the difference.

The addition of the weights means that the fork’s length is shortened so they are often used for very low frequency forks that would be very long if created in the unweighted style.

Similarly, some higher frequency tuning forks can only be made in the un-weighted style as they would be too short to hold the fork structure if created in the weighted style.

Weighted Tuning Forks:-

  • to tone the fork, simply use a Tuning Fork Activator or Rubber ball Mallet (you can also squeeze the two weights together and quickly release to activate the vibration or tap it on the palm of the hand or knee)
  • can be played by the ears, moved through the aura and placed directly on the physical body.
  • they work more on the Physical level.
  • they create a more physical vibration in the fork tines or prongs when struck.
  • the vibration is felt more strongly and at a deeper level when the stem of the fork is placed on the body (this is due to the weights at the end of each prong).
  • the sound lasts longer but is softer and more diffused than the identical frequency in an unweighted fork.
  • Weighted forks are excellent to use for pain relief, reducing inflammation and inducing relaxation.
  • they are heavier in weight.
  • they are shorter in length than the same frequency fork in the un-weighted style.

un-Weighted Tuning Forks

  • the Unweighted tuning fork is plain at the end of each prong.
  • to tone the fork, simply use a Tuning Fork Activator or Rubber ball Mallet (you can also tap it on the palm of the hand or knee, or sometimes tap two forks together)
  • can be played by the ears, moved through the aura and placed directly on the physical body.
  • they create a more subtle vibration in the tines or prongs when struck.
  • they work more on the subtle or energetic level.
  • the vibration is felt less strongly and is more subtle when the stem of the fork is placed on the body.
  • the sound does not last as long, but it is sharper and more crystallized.
  • these forks are excellent to use for clearing the energy field, for mental and emotional balance, for promoting inner harmony and wholeness and spiritual connection.
  • they are lighter in weight.
  • they are longer in length than the same fork in weighted type.

Un-Weighted and Weighted Tuning Forks

The choice of whether you use weighted or unweighted tuning forks (or a combination of both) should be based on what you hope to achieve from your sound session, as both types of forks work in different ways to support your wellbeing.

The weights on weighted tuning forks have the effect of directing the soundwaves down the prongs of the fork, through the stem. This makes them particularly effective when placed physically on the body, as the frequencies can more directly reach the meridians, chakras or areas of the body that may be blocked or uncomfortable.

Unweighted tuning forks, on the other hand, tend to disperse the soundwaves outwards and upwards, this has a gentler balancing and energising vibrational effect on the whole body and aura.

It is also possible to use the weighted forks off the body in the same way as the unweighted for similar effect, making them a popular choice for some people when setting out to explore the use of tuning forks for health and wellbeing.

Here are a couple of audio tracks of the two types of forks – have a listen.

Tuning Fork Finishes

Tuning fork styles

In today’s post we wanted to share a little bit with you about our tuning forks.

We offer a range of different tuning forks across a wide variety of frequencies; and we thought we would begin this series by talking about the different fork finishes we have available.

Here at Sacred Notes, we offer two different finishes on our tuning forks, aluminium, or gold tone.

All of our Tuning Forks are machined and not cast, and are made from special grade Aluminium alloy and frequency which is guaranteed tuned to an accuracy of +/- 0.25%*

The quality of tuning forks is mainly dependent on three factors – the type of material used, the method of manufacture and the accuracy of their frequency tuning.

Aluminium and Gold tone tuning Forks

The aluminium forks are untreated and have a silver finish, aluminium is chosen over stainless steel for tuning forks that are used for sound healing, due to its ability to sustain pure tones and produce multiple harmonic overtones. The rich overtones produced by high grade aluminium alloy tuning forks, create a deeper and richer sound experience.

Tuning forks are used for healing because of their ability to emit vibrations and frequency.

When a tuning fork is struck, it not only vibrates the fork itself, but through the law of resonance, it also vibrates the surrounding air space, as well as any energy bodies that inhabit that space, with the same frequency of vibration. This vibration can be harnessed to help increase our health and wellbeing; physical, mental and emotional. (more of that in another post)

The gold tone forks have been created through a process called anodising; this creates an oxide layer, to which different colours can be added, over the metal surface. Gold anodizing is an alchemical and electrochemical process in which metal, gold or dyes are applied on the surface of a base metal like aluminium, titanium, or zinc. The process adds a finish which enhances the metal’s texture, corrosion resistance, and durabilityWhen applied to tuning forks this alchemical process also incorporates colour vibrations into the overall vibrational energetic effects of the fork frequency.

The world over, for centuries gold has been considered a precious symbol of purity, vibrancy, health, and wealth. Whether it’s a golden nugget, gold caught beneath the surface of a quartz crystal or gold leaf decorating a piece of art, it is easy to be drawn to the beauty of gold and its joyful energy.

A simple slant of sunlight, the sparkle of a star or the glitter of a thousand grains of sand beneath our feet on a beach, gold reminds us of and connects us to the world’s natural beauty.

Although there is no measurable change to the tuned frequency of a ‘gold tone’ fork, anecdotal evidence shows that many people ‘hear’ and ‘feel’ a distinct difference between the two different fork finishes, on forks tuned to an identical frequency.

The gold tone forks are often described as having a smoother richer sound, with more depth to the overtones, and just ‘different’ in a positive way.

This is the reason that gold tone tuning forks were chosen the ‘Tuning for Self-Care CPD workshop and the ‘Tuning Fork Therapist Training’ that she co-created with two other dear ‘sound sisters’; and are included with both those courses. (You can read more about these tuning fork courses here)

Here are a couple of audio tracks of an OM fork – firstly in the aluminium finish and then in the gold tone – have a listen.

* It should be noted that all tuning forks, whether aluminium alloy or stainless steel, are affected to a slight degree, by temperature and where you are in relation to sea level.

Accuracy is not determined by the design or material of the tuning fork, but by an accurate tuning process carried out in a consistent environment.
